A Day of Seuss

Friday, March 1st was Dr. Seuss' birthday so we had a party. The day started off with green eggs, we skipped the ham. Kelly had his scrambled with cheese.

The other kids preferred 'eggs in a frame' style.

I had stayed up late the night before to decorate the classroom, this was the first thing that they noticed, a new fish!

The new fish had a message for the kids- sorry it's blurry, fish are really hard to photograph! The kids named him Seuss but I'm fairly sure they've changed the name to Pizza, not sure why.

The kids were excited to see that Indy the guinea pig also had a message for them...

The first thing that we did was attempt to stack apples, from Ten Apples Up On Top.

We started with 10 but someone really likes apples, so we only had 9 for stacking. Each of the kids came up with a Seuss-like costume. Emmy was super excited to get to wear two shirts at once. I'm not sure why it was such a thrill but she was so proud!

Emmy tried to stack them on her head but didn't have much success so she found a better method, she stuffed them into her shirt!

She was able to get 5 apples but it didn't look very comfortable!

We did some 'real' school and then took a break for lunch. The kids watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas while I made a Lorax quesadilla, Horton's eggs and fish (One Fish, Two Fish).

I made Seuss punch from a recipe I found online, it's Jello jigglers in Sprite. All of the big kids dumped the Sprite out and ate the Jello.

Emmy dipped her egg in the Sprite and grossed out all of her siblings!

For dessert we had Dr. Seuss hats, made from Oreos, frosting and Lifesaver Gummies, they were really good!

Emmy treated us to some after-lunch entertainment.

We headed back down to the classroom and did some school with Dr. Seuss stuff mixed it. Riley is taking her TCAPs soon (Colorado standardized tests) so I put together a Dr. Seuss themed writing prompt in TCAP format.

Emmy changed into jammies and headed to her favorite spot in the classroom.

James is learning about adjectives so he made a Grinch and wrote the adjectives that describe him.

Once we had finished all of our school, we voted on our costumes.

Riley won for Most Colorful...

James won Funniest...

Kelly was Craziest...

Emily took the prize for Cutest! No big surprise there...

I was awarded Most Creative...

We finished the day with 'Roast Beast' and potatoes, of course! We were going to watch the Lorax before bed but Jarrett hates that movie so we watched an episode of the Avengers instead. The kids had so much fun and actually got more school done than they normally do, getting to do fun things in between lessons made them do the lessons much quicker!

Not Wandering Yet

We haven't traveled much lately. Emmy arrived in November of 2011 and doesn't like the RV so we haven't done any long trips. I've decided to update this more often with our day to day adventures instead. I'm doing it partially for my own benefit, I love being able to look back on everything. I also want to keep it updated for my little sister who is in the Peace Corps in Africa, so she can see what we're doing.

Here's a picture of a bit of wandering we've done lately, we took a trip to Las Vegas and then San Diego. Here are the kids again on the Lego donkey at Legoland.

Tuesday

Tuesday morning, I finally felt better. We all went down to the pool. It was so much fun getting to watch the kids show off after being stuck inside!

While I was sick, Jarrett did some shopping. He saw an ad for a car on the bulletin board at the hospital and went to look at it. It ended up being an amazing deal on a car that he's always wanted so he bought it.

Jarrett's mom and sister had been visiting Grove, OK and were about to head back to California so they agreed to drive car back to Parker. Jarrett's mom loves old cars so she had a good time driving it.

In the evening, we left for St. Louis. We arrived late, around 10:00. Our campground was directly across the river from the Gateway Arch. When Kelly saw it, he thought it was a rainbow. We're excited to visit it tomorrow.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday

Apparently, the heat really doesn't agree with me during this pregnancy. I wound up in the hospital on Saturday. Luckily Jarrett is wonderful and took the kids swimming and fishing and took care of me while I was sick in bed. He sent me fun pictures like this. The kids LOVE swimming!

There was a fishing pond at the campsite and the kids had a great time fishing. It was an amazing little pond. Everytime the kids cast, they caught a fish within five minutes.

There was only one problem with their catches...they were tiny!

Friday

We left Friday morning and drove to Miama, Oklahoma. Jarrett's aunt and uncle live there. Jarrett had fun catching up with his uncle, he hasn't seen him for years.

Jarrett and I stopped by his grandmother's assisted living home. She was doing better than we expected.

We drove on and into Joplin, Missouri. Jarret's cousin rides BMX bikes and brought everyone to the indoor park where he rides. James and Kelly (and Jarrett) all really wanted to try it.

We drove through town and saw the tornado destruction. It was so sad to see.

This is the local high school. There was supposed to be a gratuation here on the day of the tornado but they had moved it to the college. It probably saved hundreds of lives.

We drove through the evening and pulled into Springfield, Missouri for the night. We took the kids down to the pool for a late night swim.

Thursday

Yay! We have AC!! We're not sure what the repairman did but it's working!

We woke up late today and went into town to see Cars 2. The kids have been so excited to see it. They all loved it but Jarrett and I weren't impressed, the first one was definitly better.

In the evening, Jarrett took the kids down to the lake to fish. They didn't catch anything but they still had a good time.

We watched the sun go down over the lake. It was very pretty here but the heat is just to much. I've felt sick since we first arrived. We're going to change course and head towards the Great Lakes instead of Louisianna, We're hoping for some cool weather!

Wednesday

On Wednesday, we met Jarrett's step mom and sister at his cousin's house. She lives on Grand Lake. The kids went out on her paddleboat with their cousin.

We spent the day there, swimming in her pool and trying to stay out of the heat. The kids really want a pool now!

While we were at her house, we had a repairman out to look at the air conditioning on the RV. It's just TOO hot. We're planning on going through Louisianna and Texas but I don't think I can do it without better AC!
